2017: BVL Celebrates 75 Years of Service to America’s Veterans

In 1942 America, the war effort was in full swing; individuals and organizations were coalescing around the troops, and one unique organization was being formed by a favorite American sport:  Bowling. Seventy-five years ago, officials representing every facet of the sport of bowling met to coordinate efforts to support the troops -- bringing together all the sport’s integers to provide the most complete approach to the campaign. Thus, BVL, then known as “The Bowlers Victory Legion” was born. BVL’s first Administrator, A. L. “Ebby” Ebersole noted in the minutes of that meeting: “The Bowlers Victory Legion was organized on ...

“Creating” a New Lease on Life

It’s a new year, and a renewed time for veterans in care at VA Hospitals nationwide to test their creative mettle… During January, February and March, veterans enrolled at VA medical facilities or outpatient clinics are invited to enter their art, music, dance, drama and creative writing entries into the local competition phase of the 2017 National Veterans Creative Arts Competition.  A longtime supporter of the event, BVL believes in and understands the value of art therapy.  Veterans:  Get out your paintbrushes, pianos, and powerful voices.   Share your soul’s story!

Some of our programs, like our annual VA/BVL Veterans Bowling Tournament, are decades-old traditions (now in it’s 70th year), while others, like our “Welcome Home: We Salute You” events and Project Military Music, were just recently launched. We pride ourselves on identifying the needs of our veterans and providing programs to fill those needs in a cost efficient and effective manner. ul...

Happy Holidays from BVL

As I prepare to celebrate the holidays with family and friends, I take time to reflect on 2016 -- both its joys and sorrows -- for me personally, my community, our nation and our world. But, in taking stock of the year, I do take great comfort in the work we do at BVL to support our nation’s service men and women. With your help, we’ve made a tremendous difference in the lives of literally thousands of men and women who have sacrificed for us and for our country. From a “Re-Creation” performance for the WWII vets in the VA Medical Center in Togus, Maine, to a holiday party we sponsored just this week for the vets at the Peninsula Vet Center ...
